What are the expansion joints for?
Expansion joints are indispensable not only for construction, but also for facing with finishing materials such as floor tiles. When laying the floor covering, expansion joints are installed, into which a specialized expansion (or expansion) profile is laid. Such a system of seams and profiles allows different types of tiles not to crack under changes in temperature, humidity, after the adhesive has dried.
Many builders neglect the tile expansion joints, saving money or wanting to please the customer. After all, many people want to see a flat floor without additional seams, even if covered with a sealing compound. This approach is fundamentally wrong. The tile can shrink, expand, and if the installation of expansion joints is not observed, this leads to damage to the entire coating. And having saved once, or after listening to the customer, you can easily deploy the second front of expensive repairs, which, of course, is not to the liking of either the builder or the customer himself.
I would like to give an example with rectified tiles of 45 centimeters, when laying it, in addition to a 3 mm tile joint, an additional 6 mm expansion joint is required every 6-7 meters. If you do not take into account the parameters, subsequently, you may encounter defects and deformation of the floor covering.
For the expansion joint, a special expansion profile is used. It is easy to install, irreplaceable when laying tiles.

The width ranges from 8 to 10 mm. The material of the expansion profile for the expansion joint can be made of PVC, aluminum, steel with a neoprene insert.
How many seams need to be laid depends on the type of tile and the footage of the room. Usually calculations are made in advance. It is important to remember that with an insufficient number of expansion joints in the floor covering, damage to the tile can occur: its peeling and cracking. From above, expansion joints must be covered with a special sealant.
